In the summer of 1994 I traveled to Seoul to direct a play. The gig fell through as gigs often do so instead I traveled for about two weeks all over South Korea. I remember thinking at the time how sad that the children went to school year round. Now I have children and I think “How sad that we don’t have school year round here in America.”

While my family and I were boating down the Rainbow River one August a young Marine was being laid to rest in Bushnell. On our way back home we stopped and paid our respects. I thought the war would be over by now. Didn’t you?

The poet Carl Sandburg’s farm provides a habitat for a blue heron living at the Florida Aquarium.

I accidentally sold my father’s house to drug addicts. I had to go and clean out the house and resell it. I had to return to a place that I thought I would never see again. On the last night that I was there I drove over to the Conewango River and thought about how sometimes you really do have to step in the same river twice. This dairy farm is nearby and is something out of central casting. It hasn’t change one bit in the thirty some odd years that I have known it. The angle is from North Carolina and it now permanently stands watch over how I want to remember from my childhood.

This is the grand ballroom of the Cuban Club in Ybor City with the Hillsborough River running through it.

This is South Dakota, specifically Mt. Rushmore, juxtaposed over Audrey Flack’s statue of Justice that is located in front of the court house in downtown Tampa. It is not lost on me that a child is superimposed over justice. I was drawn to this image when I went to this court to witness the adoption of four little sisters by one family. Sometimes justice, especially for children, prevails.

The three layers in this image are

Natchez, MS (Rosewood Plantation or the ruins thereof); Tucumcari, NM (Rte 66); and a gator hole on the Hillsborough River where I screamed like a little girl and was shamed by my river guide, Dawn Ellenberg, who didn’t flinch when the gator thunked our canoe.

This is 35mm film double exposed with an historic church in downtown Tampa and a pileated woodpecker that did not appreciate being photographed and I am sorry for that.
